Mentoring

I work with students in different capacities and am always willing to help! I serve as a formal mentor for Park Scholars and Pack Promise Scholars. I also work as an informal mentor to students who ask. With these students, we meet on a regular basis and I help as appropriate. For example, I ask questions to help students figure out what they want to accomplish or pursue; I make connections with other colleagues on campus for extended opportunities; and I offer perspectives based on what I know and from my own experience.

I also recruit and hire undergraduate students to serve as Learning Assistants (LA's) in my courses. With these students, we meet on a regular basis where I formally help with professional development (e.g. how to work with students in a review session, how to grade, etc.) and we always have social opportunities as well (like coffee sessions).

Additionally, I work with students when they are taking a course with me as an Honors' Option. This is how Chay Beeson's case study on Evolutionary Medicine and publication (in the journal The American Biology Teacher) was born. And finally, I do SoTL research primarily now (Scholarship of Teaching & Learning) and engage with students in this capacity as well.

If you are interested in learning more about such opportunities with me, please come see me in my office (2717 Bostian)
